Application Instructions
These instructions have been abstracted from the ABNM Policy and Procedure Manual and will serve as a guide for your application process. Where appropriate, the instructions will reference the Policy and Procedure Manual. You are strongly encouraged to read the Policy and Procedure Manual in its entirety to understand fully the application process.
The ABNM Part II-Oral examination follows the ABNM Part I-Written examination. (Policy and Procedure Manual Section VII, VIII, IX, X)
Diplomate candidates who pass the written examination shall be considered “Board Eligible” for a period of three years. Each “Board Eligible” candidate will have the opportunity to take the oral examination at most three times during this time.
If, after two attempts, the candidate fails to pass the oral examination, they must wait a period of one year from the date of failure before sitting for the oral examination for a third time. If a candidate fails the oral examination after a third attempt or does not take and pass the oral examination within this three-year period, they will lose their “Board Eligible” status and must retake and pass the written examination. All previous and newly adopted ABNM application requirements in effect at that time must be met.
Each candidate will have two 30-minute oral exam sessions with a 15-minute break between the sessions.
- 1st session: Examination of a participant-presented, real surgical case in which the candidate was the supervising neurophysiologist of the presented case.
- 2nd session: Examination of a hypothetical surgical case.
Requirements of the participant-presented, real surgical case (the category and type of case may be selected from the list in the Policy and Procedure Manual Section VIII):
- Must be a case the participant has monitored as the primary supervising and interpreting neurophysiologist.
- Case must contain a significant change(s) or alert(s) in the neuromonitoring (i.e., electrophysiological data), and must not represent routine, drug-induced neuromonitoring data changes.
- Case Report must demonstrate the occurrence of significant event(s) that occurred during the surgery and associated communication that occurred between the neurophysiologist and the surgical and/or anesthesia teams.
- Data Records of the presented case must document the occurrence of significant event(s) that occurred during the surgery and associated communication that occurred between the neurophysiologist and the surgical and/or anesthesia teams.
- Candidates repeating the ABNM Part II-Oral exam cannot choose to present a case from the same sub-category that was previously selected.
- The candidate must remove all patient, surgeon and hospital identifiers from all materials brought to the examination; failure to do so will result in material being disqualified.
- Noncompliance with the above will result in failure of the Oral examination.
Requirements of the hypothetical surgical case: the participant will choose a case from the list in the Policy and Procedure Manual Section VIII that is a different Category from the participant’s presented, real surgical case.
Requirements of both cases:
- Candidates are expected to have a basic understanding of the relevant scientific literature upon which intraoperative monitoring is based. Decisions and positions should be supported by reference to the clinical neurophysiology literature and/or to evidence-based medicine.
- All materials being submitted for the candidate’s presented case and the candidate’s selection of case category for the hypothetical surgical case should be sent to the examining committee at least two weeks prior to the examination.
Materials for application with the application fee (for 2nd and 3rd exam only) should be sent to PTC — see below.
Upon receipt of application, you will receive a letter from the ABNM with specific details of the examination location as well as detailed instructions as to where to send all presented case materials and case category choices. Two printed copies of all presented case materials, bound only by a clip, will be required.
The application form can be found on the ABNM website at https://theabnm.org/oral-exam/. The format of the oral examination can be found in the Policy and Procedure Manual Section IX.
